The Wahpeton Huskies turned in a strong performance Thursday at the Shanley Invitational, a high-quality meet featuring all Eastern Dakota Conference schools along with Class B powers Kindred and Central Cass. Fueled by points in the sprints, distance races, hurdles, jumps, throws and relays, the Lady Huskies placed fourth in the 15-team field.

Seventh grader Summer Nagel continued her standout season with another remarkable all-around performance. Nagel captured titles in both hurdle events, winning  the 100-meter hurdles in 15.53 and the 300-meter hurdles in 44.83, while also setting a meet record in the 200-meter dash with a winning time of 25.34.

Nagel anchored Wahpeton’s runner-up 4×400 relay team to a time of 4:17.37. Joining Nagel on that relay were Adalynn Parker, Gracie Falck and Taylor Mauch. The Lady Huskies were also strong across the sprint relays, placing fourth in the 4×200 relay as Falck, Mauch, Parker and Hayden Matejcek combined to run 1:49.69. The 4×100 relay team of Gracie Norling, Mauch, Parker and Matejcek finished seventh in 51.85.

Wahpeton also received standout field performances from Claire Woods, who placed second in both the shot put (38’6.25″) and discus (124′ 8″), while Elise Skovholt added another runner-up finish in the pole vault (9′ 9″).

Seventh grader Ashlynne Max ran an aggressive race in the 1600 meter, placing third in a personal-best 5:37.09. Falck picked up an eighth-place finish in the 400 meter with a time of 1:04.75.

The boys posted a dozen personal-best efforts on the day and were led by a seventh-place finish in the 4×200 relay, where Brayden Steffens, Aiden Bontjes, Cayden Barth and Jack Gilbertson combined to run 1:33.60. Wahpeton also added a 10th-place finish in the 4×100 relay with Connor Ireland, Steffens, Barth and Gilbertson in 45.72. Individually, Steffens placed ninth in the long jump with a personal-best leap of 20’6.75″.
