The Wahpeton Huskies opened the outdoor track and field season at the Spartan Classic with a strong showing despite cool conditions. The Lady Huskies placed second out of 10 teams, highlighted by multiple state qualifiers and personal best performances.
Summer Nagel led the way, qualifying for the state meet in three events. Nagel won the 200 (25.87) and 400 meter (58.23, SQ), while also finishing runner-up in the 300 meter hurdles (47.08). Additional state qualifiers included Taylor Mauch in the 100 meter (2nd, 12.92), Elise Skovholt in the pole vault (2nd, 9’6”) and Claire Woods in the shot put (2nd, 38’5”).
Mauch added a third place, personal record in the 200 meter (26.91), while Woods placed third in the discus (108’10”). Ashlynne Max recorded PR performances in both the 800 meter (3rd, 2:38.51) and 1600 meter (3rd, 5:40.66). Addie Parker placed third in the 400 meter and helped lead the winning 4×400 relay alongside Hayden Matejcek, Peyton Bertelsen and Mauch (4:27.72).
On the boys’ side, Brayden Steffens highlighted the meet with a win in the long jump (19’8.5”). Cayden Barth placed fourth in the 300 meter hurdles and joined the runner-up 4×400 relay team with Aiden Bontjes, Levi Flieth and Chandler Rickabaugh (3:48.83).
