The Minnesota Department of Health said on Monday that all youth sports can begin games on Jan. 14, 10 days after practices can begin.

Minnesota governor Tim Walz had placed a pause order on all youth activities in November and extended it on Dec. 18.

The other major news from the announcement was that all participants and other personnel will be required to wear masks at all times during practice and in competition. The only sports that won’t have to wear masks will be wrestling, swimming and diving and gymnastics.

The start date allows for a 15-week season for basketball and hockey and a 12-week season for wrestling. Teams will be allowed to play two games a week, with three games being allowed over the final two weeks to adjust for any postponements.

With a starting date of Jan. 14, the winter state tournaments are now scheduled either the week of March 29 or April 5.

The health department did not say if fans would be allowed to attend the games. Further guidance is expected to come in the next week.
