Senior pitcher Rylan Flack had his strikeout pitches working early Thursday, but the Huskies defense unraveled on a cold and windy night at John Randall Field
The Wahpeton Huskies suffered a home sweep Thursday at the hands of Fargo North. The Spartans won by scores of 19-1 and 14-0.
Payton Spitzer pitched five flawless innings in game one, holding the Huskies to three hits while striking out seven. Spitzer also homered and scored three times in a 4-for-4 performance at the plate.
Cohen Gephart also smashed a three-run homer to deep center field, as the Spartans tallied 15 hits in the opener.
Rylan Flack notched two strikeouts in the first inning, but the defense sputtered behind him in the middle frames and he was saddled with the loss. North belted both of its homers after Wahpeton went to the bullpen.
Wahpeton was led by singles from Ryan Braun, Cayson Pinsonneault and Cale Gilbertson. Pinsonneault delivered the team’s lone RBI in the fifth inning.
In game two, Jack Joyce commanded the mound for North, striking out six across four scoreless frames. Spitzer and Elijah Enger homered, as the latter fell a double shy of the cycle in the blowout victory.
Carter Hockert took the loss. The righty grinded through five innings, tossing 104 pitches on a day where the RealFeel temperature dropped to 48 degrees. He remained on the mound for the duration of the Spartans’ eight-run fifth inning.
Wahpeton received singles from Carter Polda, Hajek, Braun and Riley Jones.
Defensively, Huskies center fielder Evan Dockter made three diving catches in the doubleheader. Jones had a knee-sliding stop in game two, accounting for four total outs at shortstop in the nightcap.
Wahpeton falls to 0-6 on the season and hosts Grand Forks Central at 5 p.m. Tuesday in a doubleheader on KBMW News Live YouTube. North improves to 5-5 overall.
