The Wahpeton Huskies track and field program opened the outdoor season Thursday in impressive fashion at the Horace Lions Invitational. Wahpeton recorded 50 personal-best performances while adding six new state qualifying marks in a strong team effort.

The Lady Huskies were led by standout performances across the track and field events. Claire Woods was a double champion, winning the shot put (40’0”) and discus (116’3”), earning state-qualifying marks in both events. Teammate Ella Langenwalter also had a strong meet, placing second in the shot put (33’3”), second in the discus (85’8”), and third in the javelin (83’4”) with a personal-best by more than 20 feet.

On the track, Addie Parker delivered a huge performance in the 400 meter, winning in a state-qualifying personal-best 1:00.88. Parker also teamed up with Hayden Matejcek, Taylor Mauch, and Summer Nagel to win the 4×200 relay in 1:46.15, another state-qualifying mark.

Taylor Mauch had a breakout day, winning the 200 meter in 26.66, a personal-best, state-qualifying time, while also placing fourth in the 100 meter in 12.55. Nagel placed third in the 100 meter in 12.54 with a personal-best, state-qualifying mark and added a runner-up finish in the 100-meter hurdles in 16.36.

The Huskies also captured the 4×400 relay title as Parker, Gracie Falck, Mauch, and Nagel crossed in 4:20.33. Seventh grader Ashlynne Max continued her strong season by winning the 1600 meter in 5:44.35. Another state-qualifier came from Elise Skovholt, who won the pole vault at a personal-best 9’9”.

The Wahpeton boys also turned in a strong showing, highlighted by relay success and hurdle performances. Cayden Barth won the 300-meter hurdles in 44.02, a personal best, and was part of two winning relay teams.

The Huskies won the 4×200 relay in 1:34.51 with Brayden Steffens, Chandler Rickabaugh, Barth, and Jack Gilbertson, and the 4×400 relay in 3:50.91 with Aiden Bontjes, Levi Flieth, Barth, and Rickabaugh.

The 4×100 relay team of Karter Oswalt, Steffens, Barth, and Gilbertson placed third in 46.15. Both the 4×100 and 4×200 relays narrowly missed state-qualifying standards while showing major improvement.

In the field events, Isaac Anderson had a breakout meet with a third-place finish in the shot put at 45’11” and fifth in the discus at 112’6”, both personal bests. Every thrower recorded at least one personal-best during the meet.
