The sixth-seeded Breckenridge-Wahpeton Storm sent shockwaves through the Section 8AA Tournament by knocking off third-seeded Hawley in a 4-3 extra-inning victory Tuesday. Hawley entered the contest ranked 10th in the state, having already swept Breckenridge-Wahpeton in the season opener.
The Storm (13-7) bested the Nuggets (20-6) in the ninth inning, when Skylie Pulskamp plated Tenley Hills on a bunt single to take the lead.
Adi Dodge was the only Storm hitter to record multiple hits, but the defense held strong with just one error. Dodge belted her 16th double and delivered two runs in the contest.
Claire Langenwalter, Aubrey Boesen, Dodge and Pulskamp each had one RBI. Langenwalter’s groundout to third scored Kaylie Moses to tie the game at 3-3 in the top of the seventh.
Boesen hit a double and Puslkamp tallied the Storm’s lone steal.
Marley Mumm provided a warrior’s effort in the circle, pitching all nine innings. The Storm junior worked around nine hits, allowing three earned runs while walking three and striking out four.
Ava Jaehning continued her stellar play at the keystone. The freshman second baseman made a diving stop and flipped the ball to second for a key out that shifted momentum.
Addison Sanvick, Mallory Halvorson and Eagan Hastings led Hawley with two hits apiece. Halverson tripled and Brooke Geffre doubled for the Nuggets’ only extra-base hits.
Pitching stats for Hawley were unavailable as of press time.
The Storm (13-7) stays unbeaten in the section tournament, moving on to play second-seeded Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton (20-3) on the road at 5 p.m. Thursday.
