Monday brought a fitting forecast for the Breckenridge-Wahpeton Storm, as rain fell throughout the team’s 11-4 victory over 11th-seeded Perham in the opening round of the Section 8AA Tournament.
The sixth-seeded Storm scored nine runs in the fifth and sixth innings to erase a 4-2 deficit and advance to the second round Tuesday at Hawley.
Lightning struck in the form of Marley Mumm, as the Storm ace fanned 11 batters in the rain-soaked affair. The junior scattered six hits, walked two and allowed two earned runs across seven innings.
Mumm pounded the zone, firing 49 of 60 pitches for strikes.
Aubrey Boesen had a big day at the dish, batting 2-for-3 with a home run, a double, three runs and two RBIs.
Adi Dodge posted a similar line, going 2-for-3 with a pair of singles, three runs and two RBIs. Dodge had her best baserunning game of the season, as the senior stole three bags, tying Claire Langenwalter for the team high.
Ava Jaehning and Collyn Hought collected two steals apiece, and Tenley Hills swiped another on a night where the Storm tallied 11 thefts. Hought also collected two hits and supplied three runs in total.
Langenwalter used patience at the plate, walking in each of her four appearances to supply a pair of runs. Jaehning employed the same approach, turning two walks into two runs atop the order. The Storm lineup drew 11 walks in the game.
Breckenridge-Wahpeton (13-7) travels to third-seeded Hawley (20-5) at 4 p.m. Tuesday. Perham ends the season with a 9-14 record after falling in the single-elimination round.
