Wahpeton, ND — The Minn-Dak Farmers Cooperative (MDFC) has solidified its long-term leadership path, announcing a structured succession plan that taps a twenty-five-year veteran to lead the organization into the next decade.

The MDFC Board of Directors confirmed that Rick Kasper will remain at the helm as President and CEO through August 31, 2027. Following this extended transition period, Mike Metzger, the current Executive Vice President, will officially succeed him on September 1, 2027.

A Legacy of “Boots-on-the-Ground” Leadership

The selection of Metzger signals a commitment to internal expertise and agricultural continuity. Having spent over two decades within the cooperative, Metzger’s resume reflects the multifaceted nature of the sugar industry:

  • Operational Oversight: As EVP, he has managed day-to-day operations and represented the cooperative on the national industry stage.

  • Scientific Roots: He previously served as VP of Agriculture and Research, building a reputation for advancing production excellence and working directly with the grower-owners who form the backbone of the cooperative.

Ensuring Stability

In a statement, the Board emphasized that the multi-year handoff is designed to ensure “continuity, stability, and long-term success.” By maintaining Kasper’s leadership through 2027, the cooperative aims to provide a seamless transition for its members, employees, and stakeholders in the Red River Valley.

“The Board has strong confidence in Mike’s deep understanding of our mission and grower-owner focus,” the announcement noted.

As the cooperative prepares for the 2027 handoff, the focus remains on navigating the evolving agricultural economy and maintaining Minn-Dak’s position as a leader in domestic sugar production.
