The Wahpeton Huskies (3-1) were able to hold out and win on Homecoming defeating the Valley City Hi-Liners (0-4) 35-14.

Valley City was able to get on the board first with a one yard touchdown run by Quarterback Gavin Gerhardt with 2:40 left in the first quarter.

That was the last time Valley City would lead in the game as the Huskies were able to drive down the field and score on a 25 yard touchdown strike between QB Blake Schafer and receiver Beau Arenstein. Treyton Mauch was able to connect on the extra point to make it 7-6 Huskies.

Then before the half, Schafer was able to score on a 17 yard run after the Hi-Liners turned the ball over in the red zone on their previous possession. Scchafer’s run made it 14-6 Huskies going into the half.

Valley City had a tough time holding onto the ball with Gerhardt throwing two interceptions and having one fumble. With 8:37 left in the the third quarter, Schafer connected with Caden Kappes for the 88 yard touchdown to make it 21-6 after the Mauch extra point.

The Huskies were able to strike again with 10:09 left in the game on a 30 yard Schafer scramble that gave him his second rushing touchdown on the game. Then to put the icing on the cake Jacob DeVries was able to get into the endzone to make it the 35 unanswered points for Wahpeton.

With 4:38 left, Ethan Miller was able to score for the Hi-Liners and the two point conversion was successful to make the final from Frank Vertin Field 35-14.

The Huskies will travel to Bismarck next week to face off against St. Mary’s. Kickoff will be at 7:00 pm
