Huskies’ state hopes still alive after lopsided loss in region

The fourth-seeded Wahpeton Huskies came out flat Monday to open the Region 1A Semifinals against top-seeded Central Cass, as the Squirrels cruised to a 73-47 victory. The teams split their regular-season meetings, with both matchups decided by less than five points.

Central Cass was sparked by a game-high 24 points from Kash Lorenz and 14 from Easton Holland. Wahpeton was led by Jack Gilbertson’s 16 points and 12 from Brayden Steffens. Cooper Koolmo added nine points.

The victory vaults Central Cass (17-5) into Thursday’s championship game against third-seeded Oak Grove (14-8). Wahpeton (17-6) will face seventh-seeded Valley City (4-18) in the third-place game at 6 p.m. Thursday on KBMW. The third-place winner will play in Saturday’s state-qualifier round, as will the region runner-up.
