The Breckenridge Cowgirls checked off a key box in the Section 6A standings by dominating the Underwood Rockets 82-46 in Tuesday’s home win.
The victory means the Cowgirls (18-7) have officially secured the No. 2 seed for section playoffs over the Rockets (18-6), opening the postseason at home Thursday, Feb. 26.
It was a magnificent night for Breckenridge senior Parker Yaggie, who scored her team’s first 12 points on her way to 26 in the opening half. Yaggie finished the contest with a Cowgirls single-game record 42 points, surpassing Breckenridge legend Denise Freese and her 40-point mark. Yaggie eclipsed 2,000 career points in the process, becoming the only Breckenridge player to reach the coveted milestone.
Yaggie shot a blistering 17 of 25 from the field, knocking down 5 of 8 three-point attempts. True to her bulldog profile, the tenacious guard/forward completed a double-double with 10 rebounds and a game-high four steals for good measure.
Fellow senior Johnica Bernotas added 14 points, four rebounds and four assists. Junior small forward Piper Jaehning added seven points, while junior center Mariah Koltes added six points and a game-high 12 rebounds.
Breckenridge finishes the regular season Thursday at Staples-Motley.
