The Breckenridge Cowboys football team did what was expected of the top-seeded team in the section as they trounced New York Mills 48-12 Tuesday in the 6A Quarterfinals.
Breckenridge, who is still the top team in the state by QRF, led 42-6 at the halftime break with Riley Kappes logging four total touchdowns before sitting out the second half. Three of the four completions from Kappes were scores with Cooper Roberts, Aidan Sanchez and Avery Smith each catching a red zone TD pass. The junior QB also dazzled on a 39-yard touchdown for his first rushing score since week two after opening the season with back-to-back three-score games. He went for 92 yards on five rushes while throwing for 55 yards with only two incompletions.
Every pass catcher brought something different to the game with Roberts catching a 6-yard jump ball over a DB on fourth down, Sanchez making a man miss for his third receiving score in as many weeks from 14 yards out and Smith hauling in a deflected 17-yard pass for his first receiving TD of the year. Charlie Kratcha also turned his lone catch into an 18-yard gain.
David Erlandson was quick to the pylon for two scores in the opening half from distances of four and 16 yards, respectively. Erlandson was also done at halftime as he rushed 15 times for 106 yards.
Connor Ernst led the defense with a tackle for loss and a fumble recovery which was jarred loose by Henry Slettedahl. Jon Krause also dove on a fumble while Brock Summerville made a heads up play to get a fumble recovery on a kickoff.
Joel Lopez made it back-to-back weeks with a rushing score to get the lone points of the second half for Breck from eight yards out.
The Mid Northwest Central District Champion Cowboys host fourth-seeded Otter Tail Central at 2 p.m. Saturday. Breck enters the game 9-0 with OTC falling to them last time by score of 42-0 at Cowboy Field.
