The Minnesota State High School League has issued a penalty to the Breckenridge football and basketball programs for playing an ineligible player. The teams have forfeited the wins from the 2024-2025 school year that the player participated in.
“Per MSHSL bylaws, there was an inadvertent use of an ineligible student-athlete within the Breckenridge boys basketball and football programs. We worked with the MSHSL to ensure appropriate action was taken,” Breckenridge Athletic Director Chad Fredericksen said.
The Cowboy football team was 5-5 on the year and their record will show 0-10 while the 10-13 basketball team will have seven of their wins stripped.
The 3-20 record drops Breckenridge near the bottom of their subsection, but playoff seeding will now be voted on by section coaches instead of QRF score. This will apply to every team that lost to the Cowboys which includes both of the 6A subsections and Section 8AA as well.
“This is a difficult situation for many involved. Our top priority is always the well-being of our student-athletes and we deeply regret the impact this has had on the athlete, our teams and our community,” Fredericksen said. “We have learned from this situation and pride ourselves on following all rules set by the MSHSL and will continue to do so.”
