Overtime was needed to decide the winner between the Breckenridge Cowboys and Staples-Motley Cardinals on Friday at Cowboy Field. The Cardinals scored to make it 28-21 and after the Cowboys answered with a touchdown of their own, an incomplete pass on the two-point conversion made it a 28-27 Cardinal win.

Breckenridge won the coin toss heading into OT and deferred. Staples scored on fourth down from three yards out on a run by Blake Neelan. The extra point kick was good and the Cowboys came back with a 10-yard score from Bailey Evans to Jacob Kunkel. The ensuing two-point conversion saw Evans scramble for time and his throw missed the mark to end the game.

The Cowboys scored on their first two drives of the game. Evans ran in from 12 yards out and after a Staples touchdown Cooper Roberts went in on a one-yard sneak play.

The home team was kept off the board the entire second and third quarters when David Erlandson finally broke free for a 38-yard score. Erlandson ended the day with 115 rushing yards.

The extra point made it 21-13 late in the fourth quarter, but Staples forced overtime with 38 seconds remaining on a 20-yard TD Benjamin Tyrrell.

Evans threw for 118 yards and ran for 60 yards while Paul Armitage ended the day with 61 rushing yards.

The 0-2 Cowboys head to Pillager for a 7 p.m. Friday matchup.
