The sixth-seeded Breckenridge-Wahpeton Storm suffered its first loss of the Section 8AA Softball Tournament on Thursday, falling to second-seeded Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton in a 4-1 pitcher’s duel.
The Rebels (19-4) moved to 3-0 in the double-elimination tourney, while the Storm (13-8) dropped to 2-1 and remain alive. Both teams continue postseason play Tuesday in Frazee when the bracket moves to a neutral site.
Autumn Leach commanded the circle for DGF, striking out 10 in a two-hitter. Leach surrendered a single to Claire Langenwalter and a double to Adi Dodge, but otherwise limited contact with her premium fastball and aggressive approach. Leach threw an immaculate inning in the fifth, striking out the side on nine pitches.
Marley Mumm took the loss in another complete-game effort. The Storm junior allowed back-to-back singles to start the game, yielding a run in the first. Mumm settled in to hold the Rebels scoreless for three straight innings before they plated three runs in the fifth and sixth to seal the game.
Mumm scattered seven hits across six frames, walking three and recording three strikeouts. She surrendered four earned runs to the high-powered Rebels lineup.
DGF second baseman Greta DeVries went 3-for-3 with two doubles in the leadoff spot. Justice Sanders was clutch in the No. 8 hole, batting 2-for-3 with a late double and two RBIs to put the game out of reach.
Skylie Pulskamp had a phenomenal game in center field. The Storm junior accounted for seven outs, including a double play. Pulskamp ended the third inning by gloving a liner and doubling the runner off at second base. Pulskamp displayed unreal range, turning potential extra-base hits into outs.
Breckenridge-Wahpeton (13-8) plays eighth-seeded Warroad (15-9) at 2 p.m. Tuesday. A win would advance the Storm to the 3:30 p.m. game against the winner of Hawley and Roseau.
