Breckenridge junior Ana Spear scored a season-high 14 points Thursday

The Breckenridge Cowgirls closed the regular season Thursday on a five-game winning streak, defeating Staples-Motley by a score of 85-42, marking the team’s third straight contest with 80-plus points.

Parker Yaggie led Breckenridge with a game-high 21 points on 8-of-14 shooting. The school’s all-time leading scorer added six rebounds, four assists and two steals.

Junior shooting guard Ana Spear scored a season-high 14 points, converting 4 of 7 three-pointers and pulling down five rebounds. Senior guard Johnica Bernotas joined her in double figures with 13 points, four rebounds and four assists.

Defensively, junior center Mariah Koltes recorded a game-high eight rebounds and three blocked shots. Fellow junior center Sienna Fobb tallied eight points, five rebounds and a game-high four steals.

Senior guard Emily Gowin and freshman guard Ava Jaehning supplemented the offense, combining for 17 points, 10 rebounds and eight assists.

Breckenridge shot 45 percent overall and drained 47 percent of its nine 3-point attempts. The Cowgirls pulled down a season-high 51 rebounds compared to 31 for the Cardinals and won the turnover battle 19-8.

Breckenridge (19-7, 10-4) can earn a second-place finish in the Heart O’ Lakes Conference alongside Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton, if the Rebels lose to Perham in the regular-season finale. That scenario would see Perham and Frazee crowned as conference co-champions.

The Cowgirls have secured the No. 2 seed in the upcoming Section 6A Tournament, set to begin Thursday in Breckenridge against an opponent to be determined. Listen to Saturday’s 9 a.m. Giants Sports Show on KBMW to hear interview’s with Spear and Koltes.
