The Wahpeton Huskies took a step forward Monday in their push for the No. 2 seed in Region 1 by beating Oak Grove, 63-49. The win bumped Wahpeton’s record to 12-4 overall and 5-3 in region play, dropping Oak Grove to 9-7 and 6-3.

The Huskies built a 27-15 home halftime lead behind 17 points from Brayden Steffens. The senior guard drilled four 3-pointers in the opening half to lead all scorers.

Steffens ran into foul trouble, forcing him to sit nearly the entire third quarter. That’s when Jack Gilbertson took over. The sophomore guard collected six straight points after the break, scored 16 in the third quarter and dropped 21 of his game-high 23 in the second half.

Senior center Alex Comings was a menace underneath the basket, turning away the Grovers with 14 rebounds and two blocks while adding nine points on the offensive end. Sophomore forward Treyton King joined Comings on the glass with eight rebounds while dishing out four assists.

Junior guard Aiden Bontjes tallied a team-high five assists for Wahpeton.

Wahpeton’s largest lead was 22 points. Oak Grove cut the deficit to 11 late in the second half after a strong stretch from Ryder Soper, who scored a game-high 23.
