Lawrence lifts Sacred Heart to win over Breckenridge

Johnica Bernotas (2) battles for position in the paint with Lexi Lawrence

The Breckenridge Cowgirls hosted Sacred Heart on Monday in a premiere non-conference game between two of the top teams in Class 1A. Breckenridge was in control at the break with a 34-27 halftime lead, but the Eagles dominated the final 18 minutes to secure a 65-58 win.

The loss ends Breckenridge’s six-game winning streak and extends the Eagles’ winning streak to eight. Sacred Heart was carried down the stretch by Lexi Lawrence, who collected a double-double with 25 points and 11 rebounds. The center did most of her damage from the foul line where she shot a perfect 15 of 15.

Parker Yaggie led Breckenridge with 13 points, Johnica Bernotas tallied 12 and Ava Jaehning had 10. Yaggie and Bernotas combined for 13 rebounds, and Emily Gowin was also a factor with nine points, four assists and five steals.

Breckenridge had 19 turnovers and Sacred Heart had 20 in a high-pressure defense game. Free throws were the weak spot for Breckenridge, as the Cowgirls shot 9 of 20 from the stripe while Sacred Heart converted 27 of 30 foul shots.

Breckenridge returns to Heart O’ Lakes Conference play in a Friday night game at Hawley.
