Call it an upset if you wish, but for the Wahpeton Huskies — it’s just another win over a ranked opponent.
Following victories over undefeated Breckenridge, current No. 1 Four Winds-Minnewaukan and former No. 1 Devils Lake, Wahpeton added No. 2 Central Cass to its hit list Monday in a 53-50 home triumph, snapping the Squirrels’ seven-game win streak.
The Huskies got their payback Monday after losing 61-57 in overtime at Central Cass in December. Sophomore guard Jack Gilbertson led the charge with 20 points.
Aiden Bontjes was the hero with his three-pointer in the final minute giving Wahpeton the lead for good. The junior guard also chased down a loose ball to retain possession in the bonus frame, helping Wahpeton hand Central Cass its first loss in Region 1 play.
Senior guard Brayden Steffens worked around double teams to supply 10 points. Treyton King and Alex Comings made their presence felt in the paint, pulling down 11 and 10 rebounds, respectively, nine of them coming on offensive glass.
The Huskies (10-4, 5-3) have reentered the conversation of top seeds in Region 1. The Squirrels (11-3, 5-1) see their lead narrow as we await the implications of Monday’s loss in the upcoming Division “A” state poll.
Wahpeton will take a six-game winning streak into Saturday’s home game against Devils Lake (11-5) as they look for a regular-season sweep of the Firebirds.
