Larry David Bahr, 73

Larry David Bahr, age 73, passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, on Friday, January 9, 2026, at the VA Hospital in Fargo, North Dakota.

A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, January 20, 2026, at 11:00 a.m., with visitation one hour prior, at Vertin-Munson Funeral Home in Wahpeton, North Dakota.

Larry grew up in Antelope Township and Mooreton, North Dakota, and attended Antelope Country School. At the age of 11, Larry and his family moved to Phoenix, Arizona, where they lived for six months before returning to Mooreton. Larry attended and graduated from Wahpeton High School in 1970.

On January 20, 1971, Larry enlisted in the United States Army and served in the Vietnam War. He was honorably discharged from active duty in September 1972. In the spring of 1973, Larry married Marlys Schmit. On May 30, 1973, he reenlisted in the Army and was stationed at Fort Eustis in Newport News, Virginia. He retired from active military service on May 31, 1976, at which time the family returned to the area and made their home in Barney, North Dakota.

Upon returning to North Dakota, Larry enlisted in the Army National Guard in Wahpeton with the 142nd Engineer Division, later transferring to the Air National Guard in Fargo. He retired from the National Guard in 1996.

Larry married Karen Monson on June 24, 1989, in Fargo, North Dakota. The couple made their home in Fargo for eight years before moving to the Wyndmere area. Larry and Karen later moved to Breckenridge, Minnesota where he resided at the time of his death.

Larry enjoyed a long and dedicated career with the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway, beginning on June 23, 1976, as a section man and later working as a conductor. He retired from the railroad in 1996.

In retirement, Larry enjoyed the things he loved most throughout his life, including riding motorcycles, fishing, watching westerns, and spending as much time as possible with his family. He could often be found cheering on his grandchildren at sporting events and remained active in various community groups. Larry was always willing to help others, whether by lending an ear, offering advice, or providing a shoulder to lean on.

Larry is survived by his loving wife, Karen Bahr; his son, Cyrus Bahr; daughters Melissa (Jeff) Snyder and Heather (Chris) Lundberg; grandchildren Ashlynn Bahr, Gavin Snyder, Dylan Bahr, Tessa Snyder, Greta Bahr, Henry Lundberg and Cora Lundberg; and sisters Wanda (Bruce) Speidel and Janelle (Steve) Berge.

Larry was preceded in death by his parents, Virginia and Leslie Bahr, and an infant brother, Christopher George Bahr.
