Sienna Fobb scores on a drop-step layup for the Cowgirls
The Breckenridge Cowgirls were less than three minutes away from snapping No. 3-ranked Hillcrest Lutheran Academy’s eight-game winning streak Saturday. The Comets had other plans, staging an 11-0 run to win the game 59-53.
Breckenridge cut a 10-point Comets lead to six late in the first half when Mariah Koltes made four consecutive free throws. Elsa Retzlaff reclaimed the momentum by drawing a foul on a three before the halftime buzzer. The Comet guard drained all three at the charity stripe for a 38-29 halftime lead.
Breckenridge charged back to tie the game at 48-48 after Emily Gowin, who has been clutch for the Cowgirls all season, hit a three and drove for a bucket on back-to-back possessions.
Breckenridge took a 53-48 lead late in the game following three free throws by Sienna Fobb and a basket from Ava Jaehning. Retzlaff answered with one of her six 3-pointers on the night, and Hillcrest rode the momentum to its ninth straight win.
Retzlaff scored a game-high 23 points and her sister, Elin Retzlaff, added 18 points and seven rebounds.
Fobb led Breckenridge with 11 points in a game where the Cowgirls struggled to find shooting space on the perimeter. It was a season-high scoring output for the junior center.
The Cowgirls (6-5) will face another top-tier section opponent when defending state champion West Central Area (6-2) comes to town Tuesday night.
