Bench plays helps Huskies beat top-ranked Devils Lake

The No. 5-ranked Wahpeton Huskies (4-1) hopped off the bus ready to rock Saturday, snatching a 59-46 road win over previously unbeaten, No. 1-ranked Devils Lake (6-1).

Bench play was pivotal in the Huskies win, as junior Aiden Bontjes scored a season-high 15 points, sophomore Cooper Koolmo scored eight and junior Rylan Flack added five.

“We had great contributions off the bench from Aiden, Cooper and Rylan,” Huskies head coach Jeff Ralph said. “Aiden and Cooper provided another threat to score from the perimeter, something we’ve been looking for through these first five games.”

Senior guard Brayden Steffens provided a solid floor game with 12 points, six rebounds, four assists and five steals. Sophomore guard Jack Gilbertson played through an ankle injury and scored 15 while dishing out four assists.

Trey King was also a factor in the paint with five points, five rebounds and four assists.

Devils Lake was led by Talan Gregory’s 12 points on 3-of-3 shooting from distance. Kade Fee added nine points, eight rebounds and four assists. Bryce Exner had eight points and nine rebounds.

The Huskies only coughed the ball up six times compared to 11 turnovers for the Firebirds. Devils Lake had the rebounding advantage, 31-26.
