The Wahpeton Lady Huskies couldn’t complete a second-half comeback against Devils Lake, falling to the Firebirds in a 58-55 home loss Friday.
Tylie Brodina led the Firebirds with a game-high 28 points.
Wahpeton trailed 32-21 at the half, before taking the lead with a 13-1 run to begin the third quarter. The scoring surge was sparked by a Piper Nelson three and back-to-back triples from Claire Langenwalter. Nelson led the Huskies with 15 points in the contest and Langenwalter added 11.
Claire Woods didn’t see many touches in the opening half as Wahpeton struggled to run its offense. She found success after the break, closing the contest with 13 points and eight rebounds. Woods converted consecutive and-ones to help Wahpeton cut the fourth-quarter deficit to a single bucket.
Trailing by two, the Lady Huskies forced a turnover on a baseline inbound play with 12.2 seconds remaining. Wahpeton couldn’t find an open player on the ensuing possession, throwing the ball out of bounds. Following a 1-for-2 trip at the free throw line from Ava Beck, Nelson’s halfcourt heave at the buzzer fell short.
Devils Lake improved to 4-3 with the win and Wahpeton fell to 2-4. The Lady Huskies are back in action at Central Cass for the Region 1 opener Tuesday night.
