Cowgirls cause chaos with defensive masterclass, timely shooting

The Breckenridge Cowgirls got the statement win they’ve been searching for on Tuesday when they ran away from the Hawley Nuggets in a 77-46 Heart O’ Lakes Conference home game. Breckenridge held a 34-24 lead at the half. 

Breckenridge shot just 5 of 26 from three-point range. Remarkably, all five makes came in consecutive fashion to open the second half, helping put Hawley away for good. Ana Spear, Johnica Bernotas, Ava Jaehning and Parker Yaggie did the damage from deep.

Yaggie led the Cowgirls in scoring for the sixth time this season, scoring 19 points while adding six rebounds and four assists. Johnica Bernotas joined the stellar showing in the backcourt by racking up 14 points and 12 rebounds for her first double-double.

Emily Gowin joined the duo in double figures with her most efficient scoring game of the campaign, tallying 12 points on 5-of-10 shooting. 

Gowin and Yaggie led the Cowgirls with four steals apiece, while Riley Johnson, Bernotas, Jaehning and Spear each recorded multiple thefts.

Sienna Fobb and Mariah Koltes spelled each other in the post and combined for 11 points and five rebounds. Koltes showed increased court vision with four assists and Fobb played a key role in opening the lane for driving teammates.

Relentless full-court pressure from the Cowgirls resulted in 36 Hawley turnovers. Early in the second half, the Nuggets failed to evade the half-court trap and committed a pair of 10-second violations. 

The Cowgirls (3-4) set their sights on Barnesville (2-4) with a 5:45 p.m. home game Thursday, weather permitting.
