Breck can’t stop Minneota 4-peat

The Breckenridge Cowboys fell to the Minneota Vikings 49-14 in their first Prep Bowl appearance in 30 years.

The Cowboys struck first with a 12-yard jump ball to Cooper Roberts on fourth down. Riley Kappes made the throw under pressure and it was a 7-0 lead after one.

Aidan Sanchez came up with two turnovers in the opening quarter with a fumble recovery and an interception. The fumble was forced by Kappes.

Minneota capitalized on multiple Cowboy turnovers and took a 21-7 lead into the locker room.

The Vikings would carry their momentum to their 46th consecutive win and fourth straight state championship as the Cowboys trailed 49-7.

The final score of the year was out of the wildcat formation and David Erlandson faked the rush and tossed it up to Kappes for the three-yard TD.

Erlandson ended the day with 123 yards, six shy of 2,000 for the year. He shattered the single-season rushing record of 18 with 24 this season, also breaking the total touchdowns record (23) in the process along with the career rushing TD record. Erlandson finishes with 35 rushing scores in his careers.

Roberts is third all time for receiving touchdowns in a season with 10 and also set the record for defensive touchdowns in a year with three pick sixes. He went over 100 yards in his final high school game.

Kappes ends the year second in school history for passing touchdowns in a season with 21.

The Cowboys end the year 13-1 as district champions and section winners. They were also the first Breck team to win at the state tournament since 2001.
