Cowboys advance to State Championship

The Breckenridge Cowboys are headed back to The Prep Bowl for the first time since 1995 after a 28-21 win over Murray County Central at US Bank Stadium Saturday.

David Erlandson scored from a few yards out for his third TD of the day with under two minutes left to go in the ball game. He carried the rock 23 times for 124 yards with his other two TDs coming from a yard out each. The senior playmaker also blew up a fourth down as the Rebels were in the red zone looking to take the lead in the fourth quarter. Erlandson forced the fumble and Cooper Roberts dove on it. It was the second fourth down Erlandson had a hand in at his linebacker spot.

Breckenridge only needed 34 seconds of game time to get on the board as Riley Kappes launched a 30-yard bomb to Charlie Kratcha. It was Kratcha’s first receiving score of the year.

The Rebel rushing attack answered on their first drive with a 37-yard run for six. The teams traded scores and Erlandson’s second score of the day came with one second left in the first half as they took a 21-14 lead into the break.

Connor Ernst had a fumble recovery which was forced by Kai McDonald. The senior edge rusher also had a massive tackle for loss in the win.

Charlie Eggiman was 4/4 on PATs. The number was fitting as he moved into fourth place in Minnesota high school football history for PATs with 64.

Erlandson also made history in the win, claiming the single season total touchdown record. His 24 scores all came on the ground this season as he surpassed his older brother Stephen Erlandson’s 23 total TDs in 2010.

Breckenridge looks to snap Minneota’s 45-game winning streak as the Vikings look to put another state title banner in the rafters. The Cowboys are 13-0 as they look to win the school’s second state title.
