The Breckenridge Cowboys claimed their third Section 6A Championship of the 2020s with a gritty 29-14 victory at the Fargodome Friday against Parkers Prairie.
In a rematch of a 21-12 victory by the Cowboys in week two, the Panthers struck first with a 32-yard QB keeper by Nolan Boesl. The Panthers made it 8-0 with a two-point conversion toss to Trevor Rounds.
Breck countered with Riley Kappes tossing a 31-yard chuck to the endzone with Cooper Roberts snagging it for the TD. The extra point missed the mark, but Henry Slettedahl made it a tie game going into halftime by blowing up a play and tackling a Panther ball carrier in the endzone.
The Cowboys were backed up against their own goal line their first possession of the second half. Kappes dropped back and launched a bomb for Roberts and he took it the rest of the way up his team’s sideline for a 97-yard TD. Roberts would end the day with five catches for 188 yards.
Breckenridge made it a two score game early in the fourth quarter when Rylee Kappes snuck in from a yard out, but the Panthers broke off a big run when they got the ball back.
The Cowboys were unfazed as they went to their workhorse back David Erlandson. He had a third of his 21 carries on that drive alone, dragging a couple players in with him from a few yards out for the final TD of the day. Erlandson finished with 116 yards.
Kai McDonald had two sacks and Levi Christensen got one as well. Avery Smith had a fun recovery for the lone turnover forced.
Breckenridge has been number one in the QRF rankings most of the season as they enter the state tournament with an 11-0 record. Their first game will be played Friday in Morris or Becker.
