Twenty-one teams participated in the Breckenridge-Wahpeton Memorial Cross Country Meet at the Bois de Sioux Golf Course on Thursday afternoon. The varsity girls race featured 95 runners and showcased some of the best talent in the region.
The B-W Storm placed two runners in the top 10, with Lucie Comstock finishing eighth and Kiera Wiertzema ninth, leading the team to a third-place finish.
Their times were impressive for late August, especially considering the rising afternoon temperatures. Jasmyn Benedict ran a smooth first race of the season to place 22nd, while Gracie Falck gutted out a 28th-place finish.
First-year runner Avelina Diaz continued to impress, placing 58th, and Linnea Burger rounded out the Storm’s varsity lineup with a 66th-place finish.
On the boys side, Troy Berndt led the team with an 18th-place finish, helping the Storm secure sixth place as a team.
The rest of the squad ran in a tight pack: Jace Dauer (38th), Jack Ekren (39th), Theo Steinberger (47th), Ethan Shur (51st) and Odin Carlson (56th) in a field of 65.
“This was our second race of the week, and the kids did great,” Storm head coach Larry Lasch said. “It was 50 degrees when we ran Monday morning and 80 degrees Thursday afternoon. We need to get acclimated to the warmer temps, but the early-season times are still impressive and show plenty of room for improvement. The season is off to a strong start and the kids are showing great potential.”
