Breck bests Benson in season opener

By the end of their first quarter of the season, Breckenridge was in the driver’s seat up 35-6. Benson was able to cut into the lead against the backups but the damage was already done in a 55-34 road win for Breck on Friday.

Riley Kappes punched in the first score of the year from three yards out. He’d take it in for three TDs in his first start at QB.

The junior signal caller also connected with senior receiver Cooper Roberts for a 29-yard scoring strike in the first quarter drumming. Roberts looked in a 20-yard catch in the second half as well while nabbing an interception on defense.

Senior RBs David Erlandson and Lawson Oliphant each broke free for a touchdown with Erlandson bolting 64 yards while Oliphant marched in from 29 yards out. Erlandson would lead the rushing attack with 161 yards on 11 carries as he broke free for two runs 40 yards or longer on the day. He only toted the ball once in the second half as he took 151 yards into the halftime break.

Another senior, Gabe Armitage, scooped a fumble and took it 20 yards for the score to make it a 21-0 lead out the gate. The ball was popped out by his classmate Henry Slettedahl who also logged a sack in his debut performance for the season.

The second-string offense put the last points on the board with Jordan Kappes tossing a three-yard pass to Connor Ernst for the score.

The Cowboys (1-0) host Parkers Prairie for their home opener and look to avenge last year’s playoff defeat.
