Whether it was as a young football fan, a player, a sports editor or as the team’s hometown broadcaster, the lack of records in Breckenridge has always made me sad. Sometimes you’ve just got to say, “This isn’t perfect, but it’s better than nothing.” That’s what I hope you Cowboy football fans will do as I took it upon myself to make a Breck football record book dating back from the 1970 season to now.
I say records, but it’s almost exclusively touchdowns. Yards would be impossible because sometimes they only put a few rushers so how do I know the guy who had a breakout game in week six wasn’t getting some carries in previous weeks? So I didn’t even attempt those.
Rushing touchdowns, receiving, all that good stuff that you can expect. Luckily you can get season, career and also a couple team records out of that as well.
What offense averaged the most amount of points? Well, that would be the 2020 Section 6A Championship team who put up 41 points per game in a COVID-shortened season that lasted only seven games.
Who has the most passing touchdowns in a season? With how the game has changed it has to be someone recent, right? Well, if right before the Flood of ‘97 is recent then you got it. It was Robert Schuler tossing for 23 scores in 1996 as his team went to the state semis after going 5-3 in the regular season. The next closest passer is Carson Yaggie with 19 by my record keeping (which conflicts with my previous reporting when I was Sports Editor at Wahpeton Daily News when I said he had 20, you see why this is hard?).
Who has gotten into the endzone the most times? Well, do you want just rushing or all-purpose? Go take a look for yourself and know that there are bound to be errors. This was a collection of using stats that were emailed to me in recent years, box scores from Wahpeton Daily News articles, Inforum box scores and other miscellaneous newspapers that had box scores from past seasons that I found online.
Sometimes I would get conflicting information on stories and box scores, so I would make sure to reach out to people who were there to confirm.
The permanent location for these stats is still yet to be determined but it will be shared when one is selected by the football program.
Thank you to Wahpeton Daily News for allowing me to use their archived editions and for providing quality coverage for local athletics to the point I can track down almost every touchdown scored over a 54-year stretch. That’s a testament to them and also to the community who have invested countless hours supporting their local team. If there’s a better way to do this then I will reupload the stats but for now I’ll just list them below.
