Wahpeton graduate and NDSU track and field signee Scout Woods took home top honors at the annual North Dakota Associated Press Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association Awards.
Woods was named High School Girls Athlete of the Year in one of the most highly-decorated fields in the award’s history.
The awards were voted on by members of the NDAPSSA from television, newspaper, digital and radio outlets across the state.
Woods was a multi-sport standout for the Huskies. In basketball, Woods was a First-Team Class A All-State selection and the Region 1 Senior Athlete of the Year.
She was named all-state for the third time, making the first team as a senior after averaging 19.9 points, 7.0 rebounds and 3.0 steals per game. Woods led the team in scoring and finished with 1,976 career points, the second most in school history for a girls basketball player.
Woods also qualified for the state golf tournament. As a junior, she won a state title in the shot put and finished third in the discus and is the school record-holder in both events.
Other finalists were Leelee Bell of Minot (ND Class AA basketball all-time scoring leader), Laela Jensen of Hettinger-Scranton, Sophia Headley of Bowman County, Jaiden Haile of West Fargo Horace (Class AA Miss Basketball) and Emily Novak of Grand Forks.
Wahpeton’s electric three-sport athlete Treyton Mauch was also recognized as runner-up for High School Boys Athlete of the Year, which went to Walker Braaten of Westhope-Newburg.
Braaten was a three-time all-state football player, completing 77 percent of his passes for 1,967 yards and 29 touchdowns and rushing for 1,241 yards and 25 TDs. He had 119 tackles and 10 pass breakups his senior year.
In basketball, he was a Mr. Basketball finalist and averaged 22.9 points, 6.5 rebounds, 2.2 assists and 3.5 steals per game. He was named to the Class B all-state first team.
He also was a standout in baseball and golf.
Mauch, a highlight-reel running back and ultimate hustle player, ran for a Wahpeton record 386 yards and six touchdowns in the state semifinals against Valley City, and helped lead the Huskies basketball team to state
Trey Husar of Northern Cass was also a finalist for the award.
Chris Kappes, Wahpeton Post 20 American Legion Baseball, was named runner-up for Non-School Sports Coach of the Year. Kappes has led Post 20 to consecutive state championships and three of the last four.
Post 20 was also a finalist for Non-School Sports Team of the Year, which went to the Bismarck Bobcats.
It was a record-breaking season for the Bobcats.
On the way to their first Robertson Cup in 15 years, the Bobcats won 56 games, breaking their franchise record by nine. They won a franchise-record 47 regular-season games, including a record-long 13-game winning streak.
Fargo Post 2 was runner-up for the award.
