Diane Marie Mumm was born on April 11, 1942, to Detlaf and Palma (Thorsen) Mumm of Wahpeton, ND. She was baptized on May 10, 1942, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Wahpeton and graduated from Wahpeton High School in 1960. During her senior year, she worked part-time as a salesperson at Montgomery Ward, where she met the love of her life, Larry Gehler. The two were married on February 25, 1961, beginning a beautiful journey together. Wherever one was, the other was sure to be nearby — whether working or enjoying life. Theirs was a truly special and devoted marriage.
Larry and Diane had the honor of working together and raising their family on the century old Gehler family farm. After Larry’s passing on May 4, 1999, Diane remained on the farm she cherished until her death. Her home and yard were a source of pride — a showcase of vibrant flowers and a well-kept lawn. Her home was her sanctuary, lovingly maintained with the help of her children.
In 1977, Diane began working as an in-store interior decorator at Caspers Furniture in Wahpeton. In 1981, she took a position at 3M/Imation. She was a dedicated member of Trinity Lutheran Church from the day of her wedding and was also involved with the Friendly Homemakers group. Diane especially enjoyed decorating the church at Christmas, a reflection of her deep love for beauty and faith.
Later, while Larry was ill, Diane worked at a bridal shop in Fargo, bringing gowns home to make alterations for many local brides. She also lovingly made much of her children’s clothing, including dresses for her daughters and outfits for her young son.
Diane found great joy in writing Christian material and authored several unpublished works. Her faith was a constant source of strength and hope throughout her life.
Diane and Larry were blessed with seven children: Lynette Myrold, Lorrie (Michael) Hervey, Brenda (Chris) Hintze, Colleen (Tim) Bakewell, Dayton (Theresa) Gehler, and twin daughters Rachel and Rebecca, who were born, baptized, and passed away on March 26, 1966. Diane’s legacy also includes 13 grandchildren: Lisah Hallman, Amanda (Dan) Loeffelbein, John Hallman, Elizabeth (Brett) Janssen, Steven (Dana) Hervey, Paul (Jayante) Hervey, Harrison Hintze, Victoria Bakewell, Vanessa Bakewell, Lucas Bakewell, Damien (Sophie) Gehler, and Quinn Gehler; and 11 great-grandchildren.
Diane was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Larry; her infant daughters Rachel and Rebecca; her grandson David Hallman; her son-in-law Chris Myrold; her parents; and her longtime companion and dance partner, Jerome Hoffman of Browns Valley, MN, who passed away on October 4, 2023. She and Jerome shared many cherished adventures and years of companionship.
She is survived by her siblings: Dale (Bonnie) Mumm, Paulette Ness, Paul (Elizabeth) Mumm, and Linda (Carl) Anderson, along with many nieces and nephews.
The family extends heartfelt thanks to the staff of St. Catherine’s South in Fargo, the compassionate team at HIA Hospice, and especially to Diane’s daughter Colleen and her family for the devoted care provided in Diane’s final months.
Diane loved Christ deeply and looked forward with joy and peace to her eternal home in Heaven.
