Fresh off a five-hour bus ride, and missing two of its starters, the Wahpeton Lady Huskies basketball team picked up a 47-20 road win at Beulah on Friday night.
“Nice for us to get back in the win column,” Huskies head coach Brian Watson said. “Long road trips are challenging. Add in the fact that we are missing two starters and it moves toward adversity. We are without Halle (Miller) and Piper (Nelson) this weekend — two of our top scorers and point guards.”
Wahpeton hung its hat on the defensive side of the ball, holding the Miners to three points in each of the first two quarters.
“We were able to counter our missing players with good defense. Any time you can hold a team to 20 points you are doing something right,” Watson said.
Defensively, Sienna Fobb and Galyha Lopez-Lee formed a strong post combo. Fobb blocked a pair of shots and Lopez-Lee ripped down eight rebounds across eight minutes of playing time.
Offensively, Scout Woods once again paced the Huskies with 19 points on 5-of-9 shooting. Woods connected on her lone 3-point attempt and made 5 of 6 free throws to go along with six rebounds.
Olivia Hansen, who returned to the lineup less than two weeks ago following an extensive injury absence, scored 11 points on 4-of-8 shooting.
“We got a nice offense night from Olivia,” Watson said. “It was nice to see her get some good looks and to see her knock them down. Along with Olivia we also got good guard play from Skylie (Pulskamp) and Cambri (Mauch), as it was point guard by committee tonight.”
Claire Woods added six points, while Lopez-Lee and Fobb scored five and four, respectively.
Wahpeton improved to 4-10 while Beulah fell to 2-13.
