The two-and-a-half hour bus ride to Walker was Breckenridge’s toughest test Wednesday, as the Cowboys bulldozed Walker-Hackensack-Akeley, 48-7, in Section 6A high school football.
Both teams entered Wednesday’s regular season finale at 3-4 with seeding for the upcoming section playoffs on the line.
Tegan Abel blew up a wide receiver reverse on the very first play of the game, forcing and recovering a fumble at the Wolves 20-yard line. Paul Armitage walked into the end zone from 12 yards out three plays later for a 7-0 Cowboys lead.
Riley Kappes upended the next drive with an interception off the hands of a Wolves wideout. Breckenridge took advantage when Trey Vogelbacher found JD Gomez over the middle of the field on a 30-yard touchdown pass. Levi Christensen ran in the conversion to give Breckenridge an early 14-0 lead.
Gabe Armitage capped off the dominant first quarter with a sack to push the Wolves 10 yards back. Paul Armitage carried the momentum with another short rushing score to begin the second quarter, stretching the Cowboy lead to 20 points.
JD Gomez gave Breckenridge the ball back in short order with an interception return into Wolves territory, hurdling one of his teammates along the way and nearly breaking free down the sideline. Kappes poured gasoline on the fire with a 6-yard QB keeper and the ensuing conversion as Breckenridge jumped ahead 28-0.
Paul Armitage pulled down Breckenridge’s third interception with mere seconds remaining in the half, but saw his 75-yard pick-six called back due to a blindside block.
Breckenridge stayed red hot after the break, as Gabe Armitage scored on 4th and goal from the one yard out to make it a 34-0 advantage.
Lawson Oliphant scored on a carry from three yards out in the fourth quarter, and Jaxson Lopez secured a scoop-and-score for the finishing touches on a 48-7 win.
