The Breckenridge Cowboys football team welcomed the top team in Section 6A to town with Parkers Prairie bringing a 4-0 record into the matchup. Breckenridge sent their section foes home with a 14-12 loss Friday, shutting out Parkers Prairie in the second half.
The Panthers struck first with a 78-yard touchdown by Mason Boesl. The two-point conversion was unsuccessful and Breckenridge responded with a long drive that was capped by a 14-yard touchdown by Trey Vogelbacher. It was the first points given up by the Panther defense all season.
Paul Armitage gave his team the lead with the two-point conversion but it didn’t last long as Parkers Prairie found the end zone again before halftime with a QB sneak from Chavous Wendt. Breckenridge once again stuffed the ensuing 2-point conversion to make it 12-8.
The Cowboys forced a Panther punt and chewed up more than eight minutes of game time on the game-winning scoring drive. Armitage once again came up big for the home team with a four-yard score to put his team up 14-12.
Trey Vogelbacher completed 8-11 passes for 119 yards. Four of them were caught by Cooper Roberts for 55 yards, including one on fourth down to keep the game-winning drive alive. Vogelbacher found the junior receiver while getting tripped from behind and was falling forward when he delivered the dart.
Levi Christensen caught three passes for 68 yards with all of his offensive production coming in the second half.
David Erlandson led Breck with 56 yards on 11 carries but was kept out of the second half with an injury. Vogelbacher followed with 42 yards on eight carries.
JD Gomez broke up a pass on fourth down to get his team the ball back with nine seconds left to let the Cowboys kneel it out. It was his second pass breakup of the day to go along with a crucial fumble recovery.
The 2-3 Cowboys head to New York Mills for a 7 p.m. matchup with the Eagles. Breckenridge was eliminated by New York Mills in the Section 6A Semifinals last season.
