At approximately 5:00pm on Sunday, a Haz Mat spill was reported at the Hankinson J Star Truck Stop. A semi carrying 12 plastic totes with 44,000 pounds of phosphoric acid began leaking. 150 gallons spilled to the ground. Hankinson Fire, Lidgerwood Fire, Richland County Sheriff’s department all responded to the scene. A replacement truck was called in to transfer the remaining acid while soda ash was put down to neutralize the acid already on the ground. The acid was burned around the semi after unhooking it from the tractor so there was no chance of explosion or fire.
