Breckenridge had just one offensive score coming into Friday’s home football game vs. Pillager. The Cowboys tripled that output with three touchdowns in a narrow 27-19 loss. Breckenridge fell to 0-3 while the Huskies improved to 3-0.

Offensively, Breckenridge looked like a new team, thanks in large part to the quarterback tandem of Trey Vogelbacher and Riley Kappes. Vogelbacher, a senior, passed for 180 yards on seven attempts and added 21 on the ground. Kappes, a sophomore, tacked on a 9-yard rushing TD.

Vogelbacher completed a 25-yard touchdown strike to Cooper Roberts to tie the game at 7-7 in the second quarter. Roberts, a 6-foot-3 junior, amassed 96 yards receiving on 5 receptions, piling up 71 yards after catch in a tremendous performance on the outside.

The running game was down starting running back Paul Armitage, but the Cowboys found success with David Erlandson (55 yards) and Gabe Armitage (41 yards), who carried the football seven times each. The bulk of Erlandson’s yardage came on a 44-yard scoring scamper which gave Breckenridge a 13-7 lead early in the second half. Armitage posted a long run of 19 yards against a stingy Pillager defense.

Levi Christensen, a 6-foot-3 junior tight end, caught two passes for 28 yards. He added a sack and a team-high 9 tackles on the defensive side of the ball.

Senior speedster J.D. Gomez had a clutch 46-yard reception in the game’s waning moments as Breckenridge fell just short of an upset.

Pillager racked up 364 yards rushing and completed each of its three pass attempts for 26 additional yards. The Huskies recorded 18 first downs and narrowly edged Breckenridge in time of possession. Pillager was 3-for-3 on fourth down conversions, while Breckenridge was perfect in two tries.

Individual statistics for Pillager were unavailable following the game.
