Huskies, Cowboys defeated in respective home openers

Wahpeton suffered a lopsided loss to Kindred in its home football opener Friday, 50-12. Kindred, the defending state champion, entered the contest ranked No. 1 in North Dakota’s 1A poll. Wahpeton was unranked in the latest 2A poll.
Huskies freshman Jack Gilbertson was Essentia Health Player of the Game. Gilbertson intercepted a pass in the end zone and also took a QB keeper 73 yards to the house as time expired in the loss.
The Breckenridge Cowboys football team dropped its home opener to Pelican Rapids on Friday, 26-6. Senior return man and first-year Cowboy JD Gomez scored a punt return touchdown for the only Breckenridge points of the night.
