Wahpeton Post 20 completed a clean sweep of the Class ‘A’ East Division Baseball Tournament, held July 24-27 at Jack Williams Stadium in Fargo.
Saturday’s 3-0 victory over Kindred earned Wahpeton its second straight division championship and a No. 1 seed at the upcoming state tournament in Mandan. Post 20 reached the championship with a 6-0 win against the Fargo Jets and a 3-1 win over the West Fargo Aces.
Braxton “Bubba” Pauly was called upon to start Saturday’s title tilt. The righty was nearly untouchable in a complete-game, one-hitter. Pauly lost his no-hit bid when Owen Hoyme reached on an infield single with two outs in the seventh inning. Pauly responded immediately by striking out the next batter on a high fastball for his sixth strikeout of the night.
Wahpeton scored all three of its runs in the bottom of the fifth inning.
Myles Hinkley got things started with a single to right. The outfielder attempted to throw him out at first, but the throw sailed over the base and allowed Hinkley to reach second. Hinkley moved to third on a bunt single by Caden Kappes, and came around to score when Kindred tried to catch Kappes stealing but skipped the throw into center field.
Jackson Fliflet delivered an RBI single and Aiden Hajek plated the third run on a fielder’s choice, narrowly beating out a double play at first base.
Kylan Swenson pitched five innings of three-run baseball for Kindred, scattering six hits and two walks while striking out one. Stanley Belaskie worked around two walks to complete a scoreless inning.
