Breckenridge loses late lead in 7-5 playoff defeat

Cooper Roberts is beaned in Monday’s game vs. Ashby. The third baseman was hit-by-pitch three more times during Friday’s season-ending defeat.
Breckenridge Post 53 was eliminated from the American Legion Baseball playoffs Friday following a 7-5 loss to Ashby Post 357 in Evansville.
Breckenridge, who previously lost a 6-3 contest vs. Ashby on Monday, held a three-run advantage heading into the bottom of the fifth. Ashby scored five runs in the final two innings to complete the comeback.
Jack Norby led the victors in a 2-for-3, 2-RBI performance. Lucas Fuller and Brodie Ecker each doubled, as Ashby tallied eight hits in the game.
Fuller earned the win in relief, pitching four innings of two-hit baseball while allowing a pair of unearned runs. 
Post 53 righty Gabe Armitage settled for a no-decision, completing four innings and surrendering four runs on six hits. Connor Ernst was charged with the loss after allowing three runs in the final two innings.
For Breckenridge, Cam Nieto batted 2-for-4 and scored a run, and Trey Vogelbacher went 1-for-3 with a run and two RBIs. Ernst batted 1-for-3 and drove in a run.
Breckenridge’s Cooper Roberts was hit-by-pitch three times, as Ashby overcame a sloppy game that included four hit batsmen and seven defensive errors.
Post 53 ends the 2024 legion season with a 9-9 record.
