This past weekend the Wahpeton track and field teams competed in two events. A dozen athletes traveled to Sioux Falls to take part in the prestigious Howard Wood Dakota Relays. The meet encompasses athletes from South Dakota, North Dakota, Minnesota and Iowa, and only accepts the top 64 runners — 40 in the field events — and 24 relays that choose to compete.

Scout Woods had a huge weekend, eclipsing her own school records in two events. She was the meet champion in the shot put with a new personal-best throw of 43’05”.  The next day, Scout threw the discus 135’03” to place third, another personal best effort.

Jaida Fobb ran a blistering 59.59 in the 400-meter dash to place 10th, a new personal record.

JD Gomez won his heat in the 300-meter hurdles in a state-qualifying time of 42.13 seconds to place 24th.

The girls 4×200 relay team ran a season-best time of 1:49.64 to place 10th with Taylor Mauch, Fobb, Hayden Matejcek and Leah DeVries. That same team placed 16th in the 4×100 timed at 52.58 seconds. The boys 4×100 team of Treyton Mauch, Jackson DeVries, Cayden Barth and Gomez placed 17th, running 45.99 seconds.

At the West Fargo Packer Relays on Friday, only two Huskies found their way onto the podium among the very good competition. Lucie Comstock placed sixth in the 3200-meter run, dropping her time to 12:23.59. Claire Woods slung the discus 103’10” to place eighth. Despite not scoring points, 28 Huskies took advantage of the good competition to set personal-best records.
