Breckenridge plated three runners in the eighth inning to defeat Hawley, 5-2, in a Heart O’ Lakes Conference baseball game played Thursday, April 25. The Cowboys were hit-by-pitch twice, singled twice and walked three times in the go-ahead inning.
Trey Vogelbacher had a quality start on the mound, pitching six innings while allowing two hits and one unearned run. The junior struck out five batters and walked four, finding the zone with 62 of 103 pitches in a no-decision.
Logan Church blew the save, but quickly bounced back with a pair of strikeouts to earn the victory in the bottom of the eighth. The lefty worked around an error to begin the eighth, ending his outing with zero walks and hits allowed.
Cooper Roberts led the way offensively in a 2-for-3 performance. Church, Connor Ernst, Quenten Lugert, Gavin Hoffert and Riley Kappes each supplied one RBI in the win.
Breckin Anderson made an impact as a courtesy runner by stealing two bags. The Cowboys were 7 of 8 on stolen base attempts.
Hawley responded by winning the nightcap, 10-7.
Church was tagged for eight runs, but none of them were earned. Breckenridge relied on five and ⅔ innings of solid relief pitching from Kappes and Gabe Armitage.
Kappes was 2-for-3 at the top of the order, while Hoffert and Church tallied two RBIs each and Jaxson Lopez scored three runs in the conference loss.
