The Breckenridge Cowboys put seven runs on the board in the first inning of the season on their way to a 12-0 home win over West Central Area on Thursday.
“It was a perfect day for a spring baseball game and it was a great team win,” Breckenridge head coach Jack Hiedeman said. “Opening day is always exciting and when you play the way we did today it’s all the better.”
Cooper Roberts hit a bases-loaded triple in the red-hot opening frame. Connor Ernst, Logan Church and Riley Kappes each drove in two runs. Gavin Hoffert added one RBI and Paul Armitage slapped a double down the right field line.
Trey Vogelbacher tossed all five innings for Breckenridge, striking out a dozen batters. The junior surrendered three hits while not giving up any free bases.
“Trey was fantastic on the mound today. Couldn’t ask for a better effort than that,” Hiedeman said. “He was pounding the strike zone all game, attacking hitters and doing a great job of hitting his spots. Vogelbacher’s battery mate was Freshman Connor Ernst, who made his varsity debut.”
Vogelbacher’s defense backed him up with one error in the season opener while the Knights finished with four.
The 1-0 Cowboys take on the Pelican Rapids Vikings in a 4 p.m. Tuesday home doubleheader.
