A former executive at Wahpeton’s GIANTS Snacks Inc. was sentenced to two years in federal prison for bank fraud on Wednesday, Jan. 17.

Lucy Spiekermeier, who was accused of allegedly stealing or misappropriating nearly $1.7 million from GIANTS between 2010 and 2020, faced four counts of bank fraud. The former treasurer and secretary pleaded guilty to one of the counts and as part of the plea deal the other three counts were dismissed.

Spiekermeier is ordered to serve 24 months minus time served. She’ll also be on supervised probation for five years once released. Spiekermeier must surrender herself to the designated prison by March 1, 2024.

The court recommended that she be placed at FCI Waseca, FCC Tucson or alternatively the lowest level security facility as close as possible to North Dakota.

U.S. Chief District Judge Peter D. Welte presided over the case. Spiekermeier was represented by Rhiannon Gorham.
