In a way to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the Richland County Sheriff’s Department, Sheriff Gary Ruhl and his deputies will be wearing special badges.

The badge will have a gold five-point star inside a silver ring.

William Root was appointed sheriff at the first county commission
meeting when the county was formally incorporated on Nov. 25,
1873. The department’s first elected sheriff was Albert Chezik in 1874.
