The Breckenridge Cowboys suffered a 39-15 road loss to Pillager on Friday, falling to 0-3 on the season.

Pillager’s quarterback Christin Hooge broke free for a 23-yard score on the Huskies’ first play of offense.

The Cowboys responded with a 13-yard soring strike from Bailey Evans to Cooper Roberts. Evans kicked the PAT to give Breck a 7-6 lead.

All 27 points scored in the second quarter came from the Pillager rushing attack. Hooge broke off two more TD runs from distances of 30 and 25 yards, respectively. The running back duo of Derek Hoglin and Elijah Miller also found the end zone to take the big lead into halftime.

Breckenridge was intercepted three times and also lost a fumble in the first half alone.

Lawson Oliphant grabbed an interception for the Cowboy defense and Bailey Evans stripped a fumble loose and recovered it to save a touchdown.

Hoglin scored the final Husky touchdown in the third quarter and when the Cowboys got the ball back they ran almost a quarter’s worth of time off the clock but were stopped on fourth down.

When the backups came into the game, freshman backup quarterback Riley Kappes gave the Breckenridge fans something to cheer about by busting loose for an 89-yard run. He dove in for the one-yard TD on the next play for his first varsity score.

Breckenridge hosts Pine River-Backus at 7 p.m. Friday.
