A 37-year-old man has been arrested and charged with attempted murder and discharge of a firearm within city following a shooting in Wahpeton on Saturday.

Shawn Lane was taken into custody for allegedly shooting a 34-year-old family member in the chest.

Police received a call about the incident at 4:35 p.m. and the victim was found laying on the ground outside 1358 12th St. N. Wahpeton. A shelter in place was issued for a six-block radius and residents were evacuated from 1358 12th St. N.

Wahpeton police determined someone was still inside apartment 304 and attempted to make contact. Southern Valley SRT was activated and made entry into the apartment where they located the suspect and a firearm was also found on scene.

The victim was transported to St. Francis Medical Center in Breckenridge before being life flighted to Fargo. A press release from the Wahpeton Police Department said further information on the victim is not being released.

The Wahpeton Police believe this to be an isolated incident and the public is in no danger. Assisting the Wahpeton Police Department were Richland County Sheriff’s Office, Breckenridge Police Department, Wilkin County Sheriff’s Office, SEMCA, North Dakota BC and Southern Valley SRT.
