A Canadian Pacific Railway freight train derailed around late Sunday, two miles south of Wyndmere with 31 of the 70 cars being derailed.

Richland County Emergency Manager Brett Lambrecht said there isn’t a threat to public safety and there haven’t been any reported injuries, fires or evacuations.

According to a Canadian Pacific Railway spokesman, some of the cars are leaking hazardous material, liquid asphalt.

Lambrecht also said there’s less of a chance of a fire starting because the flammable oil tipped into snow.

The incident occurred at about 11:15 p.m. Sunday with emergency response teams on scene Monday morning with hazardous materials experts. The Wyndmere Fire Department and other local first responders also assessed the incident.
