For the second year in a row the Breckenridge Cowboys pulled off the upset against Hillcrest Lutheran Academy. This year’s Section 6A clash was a 57-51 thriller at Breckenridge High School on Tuesday with the Cowboys making a late run to close out the victory.

Jaxson Riggs had a breakout performance with a game-high 24 points. The freshman scored a dozen in each half with a trio of triples on the night.

Landon Blaufuss was the only other Cowboy in double figures with 11.

Alex Sanchez got the BHS crowd rocking with a pair of right-handed slams in transition in a seven-point performance.

Daymon Smith only hit two shots, but both of them came at clutch moments to put his team ahead. The first was a 3-pointer to give his squad the lead to start the second half and trigger a 10-0 run to start the period. His second was also from beyond the arc, breaking a 43-43 tie and giving the Cowboys a lead they wouldn’t lose the rest of the night.

Hillcrest was led by Noah Brumfield with 22 points.

Luke Christensen, Breckenridge Head Coach Jordan Christensen’s younger brother, finished the night with 10 points.

The 3-14 Cowboys host Barnesville at 7:30 p.m. Thursday.
