The Breckenridge Cowboys spoiled another team’s Homecoming for the second week in a row. The Cowboys came from behind to take home a 36-32 victory over the Hawley Nuggets on Friday.

After Cam Nieto went down with an injury in the opening quarter, his cousin Alex Sanchez took on a heavier workload and got his team on the board with a 24-yard rushing score to give his team a 7-6 lead.

The Nuggets struck twice in the second quarter to make it a 20-7 lead with just under three minutes remaining, but the Cowboys put together a scoring drive capped off by a five-yard Sanchez score with 19 seconds left in the half.

Breckenridge went into the fourth quarter trailing 26-14 and Gavin Pederson narrowed the gap with a six-yard scoring plunge. Hawley only needed two plays to get it back to a two-score game and their lead was 32-21 with 10:42 left to play in the game.

On the ensuing drive, Bailey Evans found Landon Blaufuss on a pop pass for what looked to be a massive gain, but the ball was popped out. After a pair of Hawley defenders failed to scoop the fumble, Sanchez made the game-saving recovery at the five-yard line. Blaufuss made up for the fumble by hauling in a five-yard TD from Evans, which the junior quarterback followed up with a two-point conversion toss to Dawson Wienbar to cut the lead to three.

Dallen Ernst came up with a massive tackle on third down to force a Hawley punt and a catcher interference penalty gave Breckenridge the ball on the 50-yard line. The Cowboys drove the field and Pederson went in from five yards out to give his squad the lead.

Breckenridge forced Hawley to turn it over on downs to win the game.

Gavin Pederson and Alex Sanchez paced the ground game with 82 and 81 yards, respectively.

Evans completed eight of his 13 pass attempts. Half of the grabs were made by Blaufuss who had 74 yards on the day.

Next up for the 5-2 Cowboys is their regular season finale at 7 p.m. Wednesday against the Pelican Rapids Vikings.
